Some Questions Answered
The owners readily acknowledge that the need for Nursing Home Care can
place stress on both the Resident and their relatives. We know from experience that there
are a large number of questions which a prospective Resident and their family and friends
will want to ask.
The following may help to provide some of the answers:
Q : Who will provide the Care ?
A : It is our policy to provide the best Quality and Standard of Care.
We therefore undertake a careful selection of all of our staff to
ensure their personal commitment to the care of our Residents, and periodic assessments
are carried out by their colleagues and management to maintain these high levels.
Our Matron Manager
on the E.M.I Nursing Home is
Cindy Southall RMN, who
gained extensive experience at senior levels in both the
public and private sector before joining our team.
Michele Roberts
is our manager of the Residential
Home having some 15 years experience in the care sector at Pen-Y-Garth as both
carer, senior carer and subsequently manager for the past 7 years of the Residential Home.
They are both individually responsible for the daily Care operations of the home as well
as staff training under the auspices of several nationally accepted training schemes, and
in accordance with current Health and Safety as well as Hygiene procedures. They are
assisted by a team of some 30 or more full and part time Care Staff.
On an administration level, Cindy is assisted by Barbara Robertson.
Any financial queries should be addressed to Cindy or Barbara, who are senior members of
our management team or, ultimately, to Keith or Jonathan Symms.
We welcome any constructive comments regarding the way that we care for
our Residents from Residents themselves, as well as any observations from family or
friends visiting, which may continue to improve the service that we provide.
Q : What is our Philosophy of Care ?
A : Pen-Y-Garth EMI Nursing Home is a continuous care
home providing accommodation for elderly ladies and
gentlemen suffering from various psychiatric
disorders.
Our approach to care involves looking at all aspects of individual
needs. This involves input from every member of the team in assessing each resident's
physiological, psychological, sociological and spiritual needs.
Primarily, our aim is to ensure that each individual is treated with respect,
thus acknowledging worth and dignity. Each individual is given independence,
support and assistance to achieve and maintain their own quality of life
and personal goals.
The ageing process affects everyone to differing degrees and the
effects of this must be recognised and respected. Our task is to provide a supportive role
which identifies weaknesses and encourages residents' strengths to be enhanced, thus
promoting optimum levels of functioning.
In order to ascertain individual needs our approach incorporates
maximum involvement wherever possible from the residents and their families. This
encourages the maintenance of existing skills and assists with any adjustments needed to
prevent loss of dignity where, because of the nature of a resident's problems, the
opportunities for independence may be reduced.
We endeavour to provide an environment which facilitates our residents'
changing roles and helps them to adapt gradually from an open to a more carefully
monitored lifestyle. This process is assisted by providing a caring, homely
and accepting atmosphere which allows for freedom of expression, personal
space and individual preferences. The balance between risk taking and safety is
always carefully considered and maintained.
As we consider links with the community to be a vital component in
sustaining a realistic approach to life, we encourage external involvement and the
integration of the home into our local community.
Family knowledge, understanding and emotional involvement mean that the
family can play a valuable role as part of the team by being involved with the care,
environment and activities of the home as far as possible. Where such an involvement is
possible, it undoubtedly helps to promote the well-being of our Residents and, in many
cases, helps relatives to come to terms with the adjustments which may be brought about in
their own family life.
The home provides a therapeutic environment which caters for individual
needs and is as informal as possible to prevent institutionalisation.
Q : Will I like living at Pen-Y-Garth ?
A : We are confident that you will, and we will do everything we
can to make sure that your stay with us, be it short or long term, will be
as pleasant and as comfortable as possible.
Whilst the Home has been tailored to provide a restful, relaxing
and caring atmosphere, we are very much aware that our Residents wish to retain
the privacy and freedom of choice which they would have if they were still
living in their own homes.
All bedrooms provide a comfortable living space for Residents who are
less active or desire extra privacy, with modern facilities in each room and
adequate wardrobes, cupboards and drawers for the storage of clothing and personal
belongings.
We have two separate lounges which are tastefully decorated and
carpeted, with lounge suites and higher chairs for those who need them. Both lounges
overlook the gardens to the front of the Home, as does our dining room. One lounge is used
mainly as a quiet area and the other lounge is large enough to cater for the social
functions which take place within the Home, including musical and coffee evenings,
whist, bring and buys and clothes parties also take place, sometimes at the
instigation of our active League of Friends " The Friends of Pen-Y-Garth".
Religious services of various denominational persuasions are
held usually in one of the two lounges each month, or
upon request
The decor has been tastefully colour co-ordinated with
carpeting, wall coverings, curtains and bedding to enhance the comfort of the Home for our
Residents.
We have a rotating library of books, some of which are owned by
the Home and others provided by the Brymbo Library Service. These are exchanged on a
regular basis and specific books can be obtained if required on request.
Outside there are a number of elevated paved patio areas and extensive
gardens with superb views over the Cheshire plain from various elevations.
Q : Can Residents come and go as they
please ?
A : Our
Residents can come and go as they please within the
confines of the Home. By necessity, however, we do
exercise a degree of supervision relevant to the needs
of individuals and the entrance doors are security coded
for this purpose.
Due to the nature of our Residents' problems we prefer that all
movements away from the Home are accompanied either by a relative, friend or member of
staff. We fully appreciate the need to maintain family ties and we therefore do our utmost
to co-operate with any visits away from the home.
Some of our Residents make regular accompanied trips to local
shops, church activities and social events, either with their relatives or members of
staff. In the summer months we like our residents to take advantage of our extensive
grounds and gardens and a wide range of patio and garden furniture is provided for this
purpose.
Q : What type of accommodation is available ?
A : Pen-Y-Garth provides an excellent standard of accommodation
combined with a friendly atmosphere and homely environment.
The bedrooms are contained on two floors served with a modern
passenger lift.
All communal access ways, stairs and doorways are designed to allow ease
of access for ambulant residents as well as those using walking aids or wheelchairs.
Comfort levels throughout the home are maintained by a thermostatically controlled gas
fired central heating system.
With the exception of certain clinical areas, the home is fully
carpeted in a traditional colour co-ordinated design.
Assisted bathing facilities are available with private facilities for
the more able active Residents.

their choice, and will be maintained in this room unless
practical or medical reasons determine differently, and

Q : May I bring my own furniture ?
A : We are
happy to discuss requests from Residents who wish to
bring small items of furniture and personal mementoes
into the Home.
Q : Will my valuables be safe ?
A : The Home possesses a secure safe for
those wishing to deposit items of value. Receipts will
be issued for all such deposits and withdrawals at all
times. A lockable cupboard in the resident's room can be
provided if required at no extra cost although items of
value must be deposited in the safe in order to be fully
covered by insurance.
Pension books may be left with the Administrator or Matron / Manager
for safekeeping, and we can arrange for Pension monies to be collected and distributed on
request, including Personal Allowances.
Q : Can anyone stay at Pen-Y-Garth ?
A : We provide
for a wide variety of Residents, and their level of Care
is assessed on its own merits before and after arrival,
to ensure their Care needs are met.
A sophisticated system of Care need assessment is in use in the Home
which is used for each resident both following arrival and on an ongoing basis. An
individual Care Plan, specific to each Resident and based on their assessed Care
needs, is then implemented.
Q : How long can I stay ?
A : Subject to suitable accommodation being available we can
provide care for Day Care , Convalescent, Respite, or Long Stay.Care.

separate laundry area is provided for this purpose.

if so required.

providing that their G.P. sees no reason why this should
